We work with clients of all ages to assist a wide range of educational needs. Whether coaching students to write authentic college application essays, helping adolescents develop an intellectual identity, helping college students manage their course load, working closely with professionals to draft effective career personal statements, or strategizing with parents about ways to maximize their children's school experience, our approach is always grounded in empathetic pragmatic solutions, responsive teaching, and proven educational principles and methodology.
ACADEMIC COACHING services encourage increasing degrees of self-reliance and self-discovery, while nurturing a love of learning and intellectual curiosity. Through ongoing sessions, we supportively address a variety of educational and developmental needs rooted in intellectual growth, academic skills, confidence, and social-emotional well-being. Students benefit significantly from a third-party academic advisor who works with them over the course of their education, and builds a deep understanding of their educational history, strengths, shortcomings, and potential. This intimate knowledge allows us to provide students with practical, effective tools and strategies to develop a growth mindset and handle new challenges. We place particular emphasis on executive functioning & time management skills, study habits, exploring emerging interests and passions, setting ambitious standards and objectives, being proactive with teachers, and sustaining internal motivation.

ABOUT
US
Rob Stone is an educator and educational coach who holds a Masters degree from Harvard University and a Bachelors degree from Colorado College. He has spent over 25 years assessing, advising, and guiding students (both underachieving and supremely gifted) to overcome academic and social-emotional stumbling blocks, develop practical strategies, stay motivated, and achieve their very best. Rob has taught middle and high school (in one of the country’s most prestigious private schools for over 18 years), trained teachers, lectured at top universities and schools of education, published articles in educational journals, conducted school evaluations, presented at national education conferences, served on admissions committees, consulted families through the process of applying to elite independent schools, and helped students gain admission into Ivy League and other highly competitive colleges and universities through long-term planning and application assistance (with particular focus on writing effective personal statements and supplemental essays). As an Academic Coach, he works in a one-on-one capacity with 5th-12th grade students, college & grad school students, and adult professionals.
Mindful of cognitive, as well as social-emotional development, Rob identifies the skills, habits, and aspects of mindset most in need of guidance, and works closely with families to create a customized, healthy and realistic plan of action, designed to deliver results.
TESTIMONIALS
“Rob Stone is without question the most gifted educator of adolescents I’ve known in thirty years of teaching. His ability to adapt developmental theory about how children learn and mature is unmatched.”
– 30+ Year High School Teacher and Department Chair
“Rob is a remarkably and uniquely gifted teacher. I have taught for 40 years and have worked with many excellent teachers, but in all that time I have never seen anyone connect better with his students than Rob. He has infectious energy, a ready sense of humor, and deep thoughtfulness and wisdom.”
– English Teacher, Dept. Chair

“Rob’s help was integral to my success. At a time when tensions were extremely high between me and my parents, he was patient, supportive, and an invaluable asset. I cannot recommend his help highly enough. Thanks for everything Rob!” – Student Accepted to Stanford, Wesleyan, Brown, Oberlin, Tulane

“College admissions and essays feel like they can destroy a parent's relationship with their kids. Everyone was stressed out––especially me. Rob was a gift not only to my kids but to our entire family. He helped my twins feel more at ease about the college process and writing their essays. They went from negative, resistant boys, to positive and empowered. Rob brought a feeling of excitement and adventure to this important time. Plus, he got the job done!” – Parent of Two Students
“For parents, Rob was an honest and compassionate voice. He never shied away from incredibly difficult conversations and never once gave up on a kid.” – Middle School Teacher
“J. started 8th grade with fairly low self-esteem. He is ending it with a confidence that we have never before observed. We attribute this largely to you and how you have managed to bring out the best in him. Thank you so much.”
– Parent of a Middle School Student
“Rob worked magic with both my sons!” – Parent of Two College Counseling Students
“Thanks for all the help and attention you gave to O. Your calm and insightful approach settled nerves during a tense time that kept our daughter focused and on track. She loved working with you, and things were much better (for all of us) with your support.” – Parent of College Counseling Student Accepted to Top Choice College
“My son had great success in the college process largely thanks to you. He was accepted to 10 out of 14 schools––including Brown and Pomona (where he will be going in the fall). Thank you for all your patience, guidance and wisdom!!!” – Parent of College Counseling Student
“I just wanted to extend my most sincere thank you for connecting us with Rob Stone. He really listened and understood both R. and us in a profound way, and reflected back positives about R. and about our school journey that really landed both with us and her [and left us] feeling more empowered.…That to me was the sign of a true educator/coach. He also gave my husband and me great perspective and advice about how to get the most out of this school year, and how to approach thinking about changing schools. All in all, I felt more calm, which I know makes me a more present parent, and that's really what our kids need most of all.”
– Parent of an 8th grader
"Rob worked tirelessly with me regarding my Masters in Nursing graduate school application essays. He was flexible with when he could work with me and he helped me more than I could have ever imagined…I could not have gotten through these essays without him. He helped me gain acceptances to all six of the schools I applied to (attending Johns Hopkins)." – Grad School Admissions Student

“Rob helped me convey the most meaningful parts of who I am into writing, and taught me how to tell a story of personal growth through my achievements. He encouraged my ideas to shine while shaping them into an impressive essay, which helped me get into my dream university!" – College Essay Student

"Despite having heard such glowing reviews, looking back on my experience, I can safely conclude that my expectations were far exceeded. Rob helped discover and develop the ideas latent in my head into confident essays with his remarkable editorial eye. Not only did these essays perfectly exemplify who I was, but they showed me facets of myself that I would have never known if not for our experiences together." – College Essay Student

"I wanted to thank you for your help and guidance for E’s college essays. She thoroughly enjoyed working with you and learned tremendously. Her writing skills and self confidence has improved so much this last year, with your help."
– Parent of College Essay Student

"We are so grateful and always will be, for how much you have worked with our son. You helped him to think more deeply, explore his feelings, and even form his early sense of self, beyond helping to improve his writing. One of the first things you said to us was that the writing process is an exploration and not a bottom line. You were right. And we often felt that we were very much in alignment, but that you were a more effective communicator with him - :) - so you probably did some of the heavy lifting, without knowing you did it! Very few coaches demonstrate genuine interest, follow-up, and openness in communications, as you have. Our son has reported to us so many times how much he values you, and I am sure he will be in touch over the years.
– Parent of Academic Coaching/College Counseling Student

“Thanks so much- you’ve been such a tremendous help - you brought such focus and direction to L’s essays- it’s really what she wanted to say, but didn’t know it. We are hitting send today!!” – Parent of College Essay Student
